The PhD Project
Research Title:
Exploring the experiences of older LGBTQ+ people aged 67 and older in residential and domiciliary health and personal care support.
Research Question:
What is the importance of the recognition of identity and intimate relationships for older LGBTQ+ individuals receiving care support from private health and personal care organisations?
Starting in October 2023, this PhD was built off of a similar, much smaller project conducted as part of my MA in sociology at NTU. This research uses qualitative methods to explore the current experiences of LGBTQ+ people aged 67 and older, as well as the experiences of their intimate support networks- their spouse, children, siblings, neighbours, etc and the experiences of care providers looking after LGBTQ+ people. Online questionnaires, in-person interviews and the use of photography were used to explore themes of identity expression, belonging, intimacy and sexual citizenship and the rising need for research, training and official guidance of the needs of older LGBTQ+ people.
